Perfect for every garden project

Our 10mm screened compost is ideal for improving flower beds, borders, vegetable patches, raised beds, allotments, hanging baskets and planters. It can also be used as a mulch around trees and shrubs to help suppress weeds and retain moisture during warmer weather.

When is the best time to spread compost?

The good news is that compost can be used throughout the year, but autumn and spring are the best times to get the most from it.

Spring

Spring is the perfect time to give your garden a boost. Adding compost before planting improves soil structure, feeds your plants and helps them establish stronger roots for healthier growth throughout the growing season.

Summer

Compost also works well as a mulch during the warmer months. Spread a layer around plants, trees and shrubs to help lock in moisture, suppress weeds and protect the soil during hot weather.

Autumn

Autumn is the ideal time to improve your soil. Spread compost over flower beds, borders and vegetable patches, then let worms, rain and frost gradually work it into the ground over winter. By spring, your soil will be richer, healthier and ready for planting.

We do not stock compost during the winter months as our team is at full capacity delivering firewood. Enquire here to find out when it will be back in stock.

Our recommendation

For the best results, spread a 2 to 5cm layer of compost over your beds once or twice a year. There's no need to dig it in deeply. Simply spread it evenly and let nature do the rest.

How much ground does one bag of compost cover? +
As a rough guide, one bag covers three to four square metres with a good five centimetre layer. Each bag holds approximately 300 litres.
How many bags do I need for a raised bed? +
A typical raised bed takes around one to two bags depending on its size and depth. If you're topping up an established bed rather than filling a new one, one bag usually goes further. If you're between sizes, it's worth going up: compost stores happily in the bag until you need it.
Is your compost safe for vegetable beds and pets? +
Yes. It's made entirely from recycled green waste and produced to PAS100, the UK quality standard for compost made from biodegradable material, so it's safe for vegetable beds, borders and gardens where pets roam.
Is your compost peat-free? +
Yes, completely. It's made from 100% recycled green waste with no peat content at all.
When is the best time to spread compost? +
Autumn and early spring are the sweet spots. Beds fed in autumn have all winter to work the goodness in, and a spring dressing gives everything you plant a strong start. Just avoid spreading onto frozen ground.
How does the compost arrive? +
In bags of approximately 300 litres, delivered straight to your garden. Tell us where you'd like it at checkout, such as beside your beds or on the driveway, and our free moving service means we'll place the bags there for you.
Can I collect compost from the yard? +
Compost is delivery only, so collection isn't available for compost orders, but our free moving service means you won't need to lift a bag yourself.
Can I store compost before I use it? +
Yes. It stores perfectly well in the bag for weeks or months, so there's no rush to spread it all at once. Keep the bag somewhere dry if you can, though it will keep well either way.
